First and foremost, if you are really worried about the safety of your home, then you should have a security plan for it. Remember that burglars will never go inside an occupied house, which means they will wait for the right timing, when no one is home before breaking an entry. But of course, you should not think that, since someone is always at home and that the house is never left unattended, and then it is already safe from burglars. The best thing that you can do is to set up a security plan that will protect your house even if someone is home or not. It is important for you to realize certain scenarios and you should prevent it from happening. For example, if a burglar breaks in to your home while no one is there, your belongings and all other stuffs are at risk. But, if a burglar breaks in to your home while your family, you or anyone from your family is at home, then your family surely is at risk.
Now that you have given it a thought, here are some precautionary measures that you can do to lessen or prevent the possibility of someone being at risk:
- Keys – make sure not to hand out your keys even to your friends and even if you know that they are trustworthy. Aside from that, you have to make sure that you know where your keys are located at all times. Keeping your car keys on a different key ring from your house keys is a good idea as well.
- Do not let strangers inside your home – home security simply means being more cautious. Before opening your house to someone you do not know, even if you are to accept a parcel or a package, make sure to ask for identification first. Do not assume that a person is legit or trustworthy, just because they are driving some company’s car or they are wearing some kind of a uniform. If somebody knocks into your home and asks if they can use your phone, you can do the phone call instead, but do not let them inside. If someone knocks and they look like they are injured, call 911 but again, do not open the door. Before making a call, be sure that you locked the door and remember not to leave your door unmanned and unlocked. Putting a chain on the your door can help you prevent people from forcing their way into your home.
- Locks – make sure to keep your doors and all windows at night and when no one is home. You should also try getting your kids into doing this habit, so that in case you forgot, someone else can do it.
- Do not be predictable – if you leave the house at a scheduled time almost every day and come home at the same time, thieves can easily get the pattern of your routine and they can use this into their advantage. Although you cannot really change your working hours, you may change the time of all the other stuffs that you are doing. You may also try setting up automatic timers for your lights, to make it look like there is someone home, even if there is none.
- Do not display your valuables – it is sometimes hard to prevent people from seeing your expensive appliances through the window, but make sure not to leave your jewelries, wallet, credit card or other fancy electronics where people can easily see it. Also try not to place any appliances right in front of a window as it can be an easy target for thieves.
